Information Day on "sewage treatment plant small settlements"
Today Thassos is located at the crossroads and must be solved in the short term problems with basic infrastructure of the island. That were not addressed until now, has exacerbated the effect and contribute to environmental degradation, quality of life and a roadblock on the most important economic activity in the island's tourism.
Apart from the management of solid waste management of waste water is currently the subject of reflection and discussion. The Environmental Movement Thassos wanting to contribute to this debate and proposing solutions, is organizing a conference invited two experts in the subject, the Almighty Asterios Professor of Civil Engineering and Konstantinos Ouzounis, Chairman of the Department of Environmental Engineering, Democritus University of Thrace.
As part of the workshop will propose solutions to the problem fit the demographic, geographic and economic conditions that exist in Thassos. But what are the specific conditions prevailing in Thassos? Thassos there are small settlements scattered mountain and beach, size of about 1000 residents, each separated by mountainous terrain.
The vast majority has no sewage system and most tanks are absorbent, resulting in long contamination of the aquifer and the coastal zone. It is significant that in many wells used to supply the settlements there is a large proportion of coliforms and enterococci.
The conventional treatment of sewage purification is mechanical treatment plants with high costs and then to high operating costs. The economic aspect is very important and timely in a period of acute economic crisis, of course, is something to be taken into account in planning treatment of Sewage abroad, but also in other areas of our country (Crete, Halkidiki, Greece, Paros, Kastoria, etc.), but not here. Moreover it gives the problem of the recipient of purified water after the primary, mostly, are processed. While also not only negligible, and the problem of removal of sludge.
The conventional method of sewage treatment is ultimately the only way?
There are alternative methods to lower manufacturing costs and maintenance? What is more friendly to the environment?
In what areas are appropriate alternative applications?
Answers to these questions will give the conference, based on scientific research and existing knowledge and experience from the operation of various types of wastewater treatment plant.
